TKOpinion: Pokemon I just can't stand- Generation 1

Hello, readers, this is TKOWL, and this is my first actual post on my Pokemon blog, this one non-competitive and just for fun. Today I'll be listing in no particular order the Pokemon that I just cannot stand; it can either be from visuals, from its battle abilities, or just a complete preference, these are just the mons that just really don't like. I will stress again this an all opinion thing and shouldn't be taken too seriously; if you like one of the mons I bring up, that's perfectly fine.

Anyways, let's begin. This time, I'll be focusing on the Pokemon from Generation 1 that rub me the wrong way.

Beedrill

Bugs have been extremely important to Pokemon, even from its inception, as part of the concept comes from Satoshi Tajiri's childhood obsession in collecting bugs. There are a lot of cool bugs out there, and bees seem like the obvious choice, being one of if not the most well-know bugs. The concept of Beedrill is just terrifying: a 3 foot tall bee that comes in swarms and has huge lances for hands? If I saw that in real life I'd probably fall dead right then and there. But it's a sadder irony that Beedrill, like many Bug-types, is just downright awful, no matter where you use him. He just is a really pathetic alternative to Butterfree, who is itself pretty bad. Beedrill is trying to be the more offensive version of the two Kanto starter bugs, but even then it fails pretty miserably, even from earlier on. It has just pretty damn poor Attack and defenses, lackluster speed, and not even that great moves: sure, it was one of only two Pokemon in Generation 1 to be able to deal super effective damage to Psychics, but Pin Missile and Twinnedle have laughably poor offensive stats. He's only gotten worse over time with even the starting bug Vivillon having some competitive and in-game viability, while Beedrill will always be shafted to the side. All we can hope is that he one day receives a mega evolution, but even then that might not be enough.

Rapidash

Being one of the small handful of horse-related Pokemon, Rapidash is just 10 shades of boring and one shade of uninteresting. Visually, it's just dull, with a tan/red color scheme that doesn't really catch my eye at all, and its design is one thing I absolutely hate in Pokemon: when the evolution is just a bigger version of the old one with only one small difference, this time with just a horn on the head and some more flames, it's not even like other Pokemon like Zebstrika that at least gain more proper features to make it look more menacing. Rapidash battle-wise is just boring too: it has decent attack and is relatively quick, but doesn't really do anything to distinguish it as a notable Fire-type. Megahorn and Flare Blitz are good moves, but they both just underwhelm on a Pokemon only having one good ability (Flash Fire), and not really any other notable moves. It's just a fire-type that in game I always end up ignoring and didn't feel like I missed out on anything.

Also, why does it evolve so damn late?

Dodrio

This section could just be dedicated to all those pathetic and underwhelming bird Pokemon that exist. Dodrio is probably the better of the terrible birds, with two actually nice stats in speed and attack. However, everything from there just falls apart. All of its abilities suck, it has an extremely limited movepool, and its exixtence just doesn't make sense to me: there were already two Normal/Flying-types in the game, why was there want for another? Why does it have three heads? Why does it look like a meatball with smaller meatballs on toothpicks coming out? Who would honestly use this thing anymore when Staraptor is ten times superior? Why hasn't there been anything to fix it up? Why am I caring so much about a fictional bird creature?

Seel

Every time I see this Pokemon I always just sigh a little bit. It's another one of those Pokemon that's just "what you see is what you get", a seal named Seel. A seal. Named Seal. Sorry, I still just can't get over how stupid it is. It also just confuses me as to why it looks like a dog when it's obviously a seal. I guess I don't have much against this guy, just that I have negative connection to him, and that besides being an extremely niche Perish Trap Pokemon. At least Dewgong I like the look of more in everything it is.

Exeggcute

I've never gotten the concept of this/these guys. They're supposed to be eggs, but are actually seeds, but the Pokedex nor anyone else is sure which one of the two they are. If they're eggs then why the heck is there one with its yolk exposed, how did they become sentient, and why do they evolve into a freaking coconut tree? And if they're seeds, why are they referred to as eggs in both their English and Japanese names? Gah, make up your minds.

Tangela

I don't mind this guy's design except the fact that he has little red boots. Like they seriously make no sense even being there. It also looks like pubic hair the more I look at it, so I guess that's a good sign I should move on.

Mega Gyarados

Regular Gyarados has always been a fine design for me and been useful both in-game and competitively, and Mega Gyarados has a definite use in today's scene. But just... everything about him confuses me. He gets suddenly fat, and his colors go for the full cluster mode, with suddenly darker shades and really weird lighting in his 3D model. And with Gyarados always seeming like a Water/Dragon would be a perfect fit for a mega evolution, he instead becomes... Water/Dark, and his only physical Dark STAB is... Bite. Water/Dragon would've just made so much more sense imo, getting rid of his Electric weakness while still being defensively better than a Dark-typing could ever add. Ah well, at least he still is a good Dragon Dance user.

So that was a personal insight on the Pokemon from the generation I wasn't allowed to play as a kid, but always had a slight insight to them even from young. Whenever/if I feel like it, I'll do other generations.
